Forskolin Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Forskolin?
A: Forskolin is a chemical extract from the plant Coleus forskohlii, also known as Plectranthus barbatus, which belongs to the mint family. Ayurvedic medicine has used Coleus forskohlii since ancient times for treating conditions related to the heart and the respiratory system. Today Forskolin is used primarily in weight loss treatments due to its proven fat-burning abilities for both males and females. It has also been shown to increase bone density which is not only beneficial to individuals in any weight category, but also for females with osteoporosis. Some weight loss studies have indicated that Forskolin may increase lean muscle mass as well, but there is not enough conclusive evidence to support this claim.

Q: How does Forskolin extract work?
A: When taken as an oral supplement, Forskolin causes production of a molecule (called cyclic adenosine monophosphate, or cAMP) which communicates to our cells to increase production of the fat-burning hormone, hormone sensitive lipase.

Q: Is taking Forskolin extract safe for everyone?
A: There have been several weight loss studies for both men and women which have proven Forskolin extract to be both safe and effective. You should always consult your doctor before beginning a weight loss regimen, especially if you are currently taking any medications; as Forskolin extract can also be used to treat circulatory disorders, it is possible that it will interact with medications for blood-related conditions such as high or low blood pressure, or blood clotting. There is currently not enough research to say whether or not Forskolin is safe while nursing or pregnant; for this reason, it is best to avoid taking Forskolin extract if you are nursing or pregnant.

Q: What are the possible side-effects?
A: Forskolin may cause low blood pressure (hypotension) and increased heart rate (tachycardia). If you are predisposed to either of these conditions, or are on any medications, please make sure you speak with your doctor before taking Forskolin. Forskolin may also increase the levels of acid in your stomach, which can lead to nausea and heartburn, and which can agitate preexisting ulcers.

Q: What is the correct dosage to take?
A: The typical dosage is 250 mg twice daily by mouth.

Q: How long before I see results?
A: Many people have already successfully used Forskolin for weight loss and some have seen noticeable results less than four weeks after first taking Forskolin. Weight loss studies for Forskolin lasted 12 weeks in duration, after which time there was a significant decrease in body fat percentage in the group that was given the Forskolin supplements. This is compared to the placebo group, which did not receive Forskolin supplements and which, at the end of the 12 weeks, did not have a significant decrease in body fat percentage.

Q: Why haven't I heard of this before?
A: While Coleus forskohli, the plant from which Forskolin is extracted, has been used successfully as a treatment for heart and respiratory conditions in Ayurvedic medicine since ancient times, Western medicine has only recently discovered Forskolin's weight loss benefits. While it is a fairly new supplement to the Western world, several studies have already been conducted which evaluated the safety and effectiveness of Forskolin as a weight loss supplement, and have found that it does work. In fact, many people have already used Forskolin successfully for their own weight loss.
